Hi, this year I have learned many things in all of my subjects. I learned different skills and many ways to be a better learner. These skills will be shown all over this portfolio.
Two things I am good at are multiplying fractions and writing a quick write about topics I experienced and things I learned.
Two things I need to improve on are to work better with reading responses and mathematical word problems.
Over the next few weeks I want to get better at these skills because they will be need in future studies. I also want to improve on my grades and to be a better listener.

In looking at your work, I would like to compliment you on the following 2 things:
In the last 6 weeks of school I will help you reach your goals by:
In term 1 I learned about rates, ratios, proportional reasoning and Pythagoras. This units was kinda easy but I did badly on problems because sometimes I misread it and sometimes I forget to put the important parts. We started the year with Rates, ratios, and proportional reasoning. I learned a lot of things about rates like how to find the unit price and unit rate. Ratios was easy to work with since its comparing 2 things or threethings like two term ratios an three term ratios. At first proportional reasoning was confusing since I didn't know how to do it but after the teacher explained it, it became very easy. In Pythagoras I learned how to square root, perfect squares and I learned a very important formula it is, a2+b2=c2 or reverse is a=c2-b2. Last term I mostly did all my work, like the textbook work but the blogging was good but I forgot to put the tag so it counted as late. Next term I’m gonna try to do more work and do more work and ask more questions.
In this term I did very well on all the things I learned examples are.. Pythagoras, percents, surface area and volume.I did well on all of this things because I asked questions when I wasn’t sure what to do and I studied and pretty much did what I had to do.But what I really liked learning about was surface areas and volume because it was easy once you know the formula and its fun challenging yourself by trying.Percent was easy too because I learned a very useful skill when shopping and when figuring out grades. I would really say that I did very well this term. I kind of struggled on percents because you need to learn a lot like how to find the dollars per second or km/hours. Next term I will study more and practice more so I can do better next term, I would probably ask more questions. In percents I learned how to find the sale price, for surface area I learned how to find the areas of different kinds of shapes like triangles and find areas of 3d shapes, for volume I learned how to find volumes of different shapes very similar to surface area but different formula. The difference between surface area and volume are that surface are is that there are different formulas involve but the thing they have in common is that they both have a method of finding the inside space of a shape.
3) I can relate to "The Man Who Planted Trees because I care about my environment, and I remember when I was young me and my grandpa planted a tree near the forest patch by the river.
5) I think there are a lot of reasons why people and organization help improve the environment. One of the main reasons are for money and publicity, so they could get people's attention and there trust. Another reason is the just for the sake of making the world a better place for future generations.
6) Jean- He cared for the forest and treated it like it was his home. Came back to check the forest after the war was done and see how Elzeard was doing.
The Charcoal Burners: Didn't care for the forest, what so ever.
Elzeard Bouffier- Took care of the forest, it was like his home. He would plant about 100 trees a day, just to improve the forest. Help revive the village.
Goverment Official- Wanted the forest because he wanted to be known and to get the people's attention
Member of Parliament- Used the forest to get votes, and declared that it belonged to the people of France. During the war he cut all the trees to power up steam trains.
Timber Merchants- Used forest to get money, they were greedy.
Villagers- They didnt know who made the forest.
10)The trees control the climate and temperature. It also gives us oxygen so we can breathe
GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components: Subject: English Language Arts Short Story - "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.
INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment? There are several reasons why I am doing this writing assignment. First I learned the elements of a short story and learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then, specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story. CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?
use proper Friendly Letter format referring to letter frame
I have finished chapter two of the novel, Iqbal by Francesco O’ Adamas. The genre of this book falls into the realistic fiction category. In the book the author did not include any illustrations. The book is written as a novel. They made one of the main character Fatima as the narrator she talks about her life when she was working and how Iqbal changed her life. This story took place on Lahore, Pakistan. Fatima is forced to work because she has to pay her family’s debt
The author’s purpose in writing Iqbal is to inform the reader about the issue of child labour. I am reading this text to gain a deeper understanding about the ongoing issue of employing children in factories and workshops. Child labour is a human rights issue that everyone should be aware of.
Some of the key lines worth remembering are “ He wasn’t chained because he was a numskull, it was for another reason.” I chose this line because it told me as a reader, that Iqbal was hiding something or that we don’t really know him very well, another key line is “ Two beams crossed right in the middle of my carpet, accentuating bright colours and I imagined they were swords in a mortal duel.” I chose this one because it tells us its a foreshadowing technique that kind of give us an idea that things are going to be different and that Fatima can still imagine. Words worth remembering are “two beams of light.” It tells us that there is a good and a bad side. Names that are worth remembering are Karim, Fatima, Iqbal, Hussain Khan. I chose Karim because he is the oldest in the workshop and the overseer, I chose Fatima because she is one of the main character and the narrator, I chose Iqbal because he is the protagonist, I chose Hussain Khan because he is thge master of the workshop and the antagonist. Lastly places that are worth remembering are Carpet workshop and Lahore, Pakistan. I chose carpet workshop because that is where the children are hidden and their workplace, I chose Lahore, Pakistan because it is where the story originated from and where it took place.
The organizational feature of this book is that it uses number for each chapter instead of putting clues. Each chapter we would get definitions for difficult terms and we would predict what would happen in the next chapter.
I can relate to this chapter is that we are both children and we both work someway or another. Even though their work is more difficult than what I do. Another thing is I see my family everyday unlike them they don’t get to see their family even once. The kind of work I somewhat find similar to what I’m doing is cleaning up, working somewhat difficult jobs.
My question for this chapter would be “ why isn’t Iqbal afraid whenever he talks back while Hussain Khan is still talking?”. A connection for this would be that I pay people money I owe them. Another one would be that child labour is an on going problem world wide and is still happening today. My aha moment for this chapter was when Hussain Khan came into the room and blocked the light, I chose this because I thought the author put that so it tells us how evil Hussain Khan is.
